With this blog entry, we wrap up our celebration of Culture Week 2016, and this year our students have made us so proud! \u00a0In conjunction with our topic of science for the theme of the week, we began in classes Year 3-Year 6 explaining exactly how and why English became THE language of science (and business too.)<\/p>\n

We discussed historical events dating back to Galileo’s publications of his important discoveries in his mother tongue, Italian, instead of the language of the day: Latin. \u00a0We discussed how WWI especially contributed to\u00a0the lessening impact of the German language at the time and how the\u00a0years between the wars, as well as those post WWII gave rise to important international scientific (and political) bodies whose language became English.<\/p>\n

Year 6 students studied famous world scientists, read about them and wrote their own \u00abautobiographies\u00bb to teach us about some famous people and their accomplishments, which have had a huge impact on science, and indeed on our daily lives.<\/p>\n

Finally, the students in Years 3-5 were visited by famous scientists from all over the world!\u00a0They listened carefully to do an activity that matched scientist to achievement! \u00a0Though each class visited our scientists in the garden to showcase their accomplishments, in the end, the weather won and our final exposition took place indoors. \u00a0We are sure that when you see this video, you will be as proud of \u00abyour\u00bb scientist as we are of them!<\/p>\n

Con esta entrada al blog, concluimos nuestra celebraci\u00f3n de la Semana de la Cultura 2016, y este a\u00f1o nuestros alumnos nos han hecho muy orgullosos!<\/p>\n

Como nuestro tema de la semana era La Ciencia, comenzamos en las clases de tercero a sexto explicando exactamente c\u00f3mo y por qu\u00e9 la Lengua Inglesa se convirti\u00f3 en el lenguaje de la ciencia (y de los negocios tambi\u00e9n).<\/p>\n

Habl\u00e1bamos de eventos hist\u00f3ricos como por ejemplo el impacto que tuvo Galileo al publicar sus logros en su lengua materna, Italiano en lugar del publicarla en la lengua franca de la \u00e9poca, Lat\u00edn.<\/p>\n

Tambi\u00e9n, examinamos c\u00f3mo la Primera Guerra Mundial contribuy\u00f3 especialmente a la disminuci\u00f3n del impacto de la lengua alemana en esta \u00e9poca. Y c\u00f3mo los a\u00f1os entre las guerras, as\u00ed como aquellos periodos despu\u00e9s de la Segunda Guerra Mundial dio lugar al nacimiento de importantes organismos cient\u00edficos (y pol\u00edticos) internacionales en los cuales el Ingl\u00e9s se constituy\u00f3 como idioma oficial.<\/p>\n

Los alumnos de sexto eligieron y estudiaron a diversos cient\u00edficos de fama mundial. Leyeron sobre ellos y escribieron sus propias \u00abautobiograf\u00edas\u00bb ense\u00f1\u00e1ndonos algunos personajes famosos y sus logros que han tenido un enorme impacto en la ciencia, y de hecho en nuestras vidas.<\/p>\n

Por \u00faltimo, los estudiantes de tercero a quinto fueron a visitar a estos famosos cient\u00edficos de todo el mundo en el jard\u00edn! Escucharon con atenci\u00f3n para conocer cada logro cient\u00edfico y realizar una actividad sobre ello! Aunque estaba previsto que cada clase visitara a nuestros cient\u00edficos en el jard\u00edn, al final el tiempo no nos acompa\u00f1\u00f3 y nuestra \u00faltima exposici\u00f3n tuvo lugar en el interior. Estamos seguros de que cuando vean este video, estar\u00e1n tan orgullosos de \u00absus cient\u00edficos\u201d como nosotros lo estamos de ellos!<\/p>\n
