Learning family words

Hello! Now that most of the students in the Yellow class are adapted to being back at school, and  can hear the word Mommy without bursting into to tears, we have started a new topic!

We are learning the words for the members of the  family: «Mommy, Daddy, sister, brother and baby.»  We are practicing the words using pictures and sticking «kisses» on the pictures as I say, «Give sister a kiss.»

We have played this game twice and most students are repeating the family names and they are able to place the kisses on the person that I say!

Here is a song to enjoy at home while singing a song about family words.

This is my family.

During the past several weeks the blue and yellow classes have had some classes together.  It is so much fun to share our fruit in a super assembly and for the blue class to hear the yellow students model how we ask for fruit and say thank you in English!

We have been working on primarily two topics: autumn, and the family.

To practice the names of family members, we named pictures «Mommy, Daddy, Sister, Brother and Baby.»   The students repeated the names and then we played several games.  The pictures were hidden in different spots in the class and the students needed to find the picture of the correct family member as I said the name. They loved it!  And they played very well.

In the next game, the students had to «give a kiss to Mommy» and stick a paper kiss on the correct picture, giving a kiss to Brother or to Baby.

We will continue to play with family and use family words as we explore our next topic: emotions!

«Give Mommy a Kiss!»

This past week in the yellow class we completed our discussion of family with the game «Give Mommy a Kiss.»  After reviewing the names of members of a family again, the students were told to «give Mommy a kiss» or «give baby a kiss» and stick a paper kiss on the correct picture.    It was wonderful to see that the  students almost always put the kiss on the correct family member!  Here are some photos of the experience.

Our next activity is to get ready for our Autumn party.  We are discussing the season, vocabulary and colors related to fall.

Welcome Back!

What a wonderful return we have had to school in English with the Yellow class. After the first days of adaptation, we have returned to our usual routine of having in fruit in English class. It is amazing to hear and see the progress of the “veterans” in the class. The very same children who were producing only one syllable or word at a time last year in English can now say “more please” and “thank you” to ask for more fruit or in response to getting it!

Most students also understand “sit down” and do it when I ask!!! What a difference a year makes!

The students also now know they are in the “yellow” class. We count and name the fruit each day (mostly pears) and discuss it’s color (green).

We have just begun our first topic, following Carmen’s lead. We have begun to learn about the family in English. We have discussed “Mommy, Daddy, Sister, Brother, and Baby” and identified the students in the class who have sisters, brothers and babies in their families.

Here is a video to practice!
